Job Description

Bethnal Green Ventures is Europe’s leading early-stage ‘tech for good’ investor. We’ve backed over 80 social ventures including DrDoctor, Fairphone, Open Utility, Run an Empire, TalkLife and many others. We’re best known for our accelerator programme which selects cohorts of ten teams and puts them through a three month programme of intensive mentoring and support in London. But now we’re ready to grow and take advantage of the opportunities we have to invest more significant sums and support social ventures at a wider range of stages.

The role:

We’re expanding our investment and support offer and looking for a brilliant person to join the BGV team to lead our investments into the most promising tech for good ventures at accelerator, pre-seed and seed levels (initial investments from £20-200k). The CIO will be an important addition to the team as we grow from our current team of five and portfolio of around 50 active ventures to become one of Europe’s leading impact investment firms over the next five years.

The responsibilities will be varied but will include:

  • Developing BGV’s overall investment strategy to create both positive social impact and financial returns for our investors.

  • Developing and designing the range of BGV investment products for tech for good ventures.

  • Joint responsibility with the CEO for raising future investment capital for BGV.

  • Leading our investment processes and chairing our internal investment committee.

  • Representing BGV externally and acting as an ambassador for BGV.

  • One of three executive directors of the company.

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • 7+ years’ experience in early-stage startup investment and support and 2+ years’ experience of impact investment. Experience must include successful exits.

  • Demonstrable experience of fundraising for impact investment funds.

  • Ability to lead and develop high-performing teams.

  • A passion for and demonstrable commitment to BGV’s social mission to support technology ventures that could benefit millions of people in the fields of health, education sustainability and civic innovation.

  • Willingness to perform FCA controlled functions.

In addition the ideal candidate will be:

  • Able to combine high standards with risk taking.

  • A ‘doer’ as well as a thinker, willing to muck in on everything we do at BGV.

  • Collaborative by nature and able to build strong partnerships.

  • Happy working in a small, highly collaborative team which works at a fast pace and has an open and honest culture.

Benefits:

  • Salary of £80,000 - £100,000 depending on experience.

  • A stake in future returns from investments.

  • Contributory pension scheme.

  • 25 days’ annual leave.

  • Interest-free season ticket and bicycle loans.

  • Open to flexible working arrangements.

  • Personal learning and development budget.
