Description The Finance and Management Services Departments' Parks division is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a Senior Public Utility Worker position. The successful candidate will provide leadership and direction to the Public Utility Workers of the Parks division, and provides technical expertise as it relates to performing field related work functions.

Gresham, the fourth largest city in the state of Oregon, is located in the Northwest part of the state between Portland and Mount Hood. Our City boasts a proud, diverse and growing population. This position plays a large role in maintaining the safety and grounds of the City's parks.

This is a regular status full-time position, regularly scheduled for 40 hours per week.

Position The Senior Public Utility Worker position in Parks performs advanced journey-level functions related to the installation, maintenance and repair activities of the City's Parks division's facilities. This position will perform the most complex Parks work and lead daily work of divisional employees.

The job functions led and performed by this position include but are not limited to:

Provides lead direction to assigned public works personnel; plans and makes work assignments and trains personnel as needed. Assures that work is performed according to established safety practices and procedures. Uses a variety of hand and power-operated tools and equipment such as shovels, picks, hand and small riding mowers, tapping machine, power hacksaw, drills, jackhammer, chainsaw, compressor, and portable concrete saw. Operates all departmental heavy equipment as directed including backhoe, loaders, dump truck, mower, roller, and tractor with implements. Responsible for overall construction site safety, trenching & shoring, confined space entry, etc. Maintains parks, open spaces, trails, paths and greenways; applies pesticides in accordance with state regulations. Mows, trims and edges sidewalks, islands and median strips; pulls weeds, prunes shrubs and trees and other related duties using hand tools. Prepares, constructs and maintains park fixtures and facilities such as restrooms, exercise equipment, play equipment, benches, tables, signs, trails, and bridges. Installs and maintains irrigation systems. Prepares and maintains logs and records of daily work activity including time, materials, and equipment utilized. Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within scope of knowledge or refers to other City staff. Perform carpentry and cement work, and painting as necessary to accomplish primary activities. Qualifications This position requires thorough knowledge of:

Proper turf maintenance procedures such as top dressing, fertilizing, aeration and over seeding. Operation, maintenance, construction and repair methods and procedures used in Parks. Electricity and electrical systems and facilities. Irrigation and its components. Computer software applications including work order system, GIS, GPS and specialty software as relates to assigned area. Safety practices and procedures applicable to area of assignment. Safe and effective operating practices of light and heavy equipment used in assigned area. Traffic systems, signs, and signals. Back flow device repair. This position requires the ability to: Assign work and provide lead direction to Parks employees. Operate heavy equipment and power tools used in Parks operations. Perform heavy manual work under confined and uncomfortable conditions. Communicate effectively and courteously with city management, peers, vendors and the public. Provide lead direction to divisional employees. Maintain written as well as computerized records and daily logs. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Respond to emergencies on a 24 hour basis. Work in environments requiring the use of a respirator. Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position. The Senior Public Utility Worker position requires knowledge and experience that provides the selected candidate with the ability to lead and perform the functions of the position. This includes High school diploma or equivalent, and Three years of directly related work experience in Parks Maintenance and/or general construction experience. This position is benefited by experience performing operational / maintenance functions supporting Parks Operations.

Required Licenses and Certifications: Class A or B CDL with endorsements. Confined Space certification is preferred, or the ability to gain within six months. Current Public Pesticide Spray Applicators license preferred, or the ability to gain within six months.
