Background

About PUBLIC

PUBLIC helps technology startups transform public services. We provide insight, support, networks and capital to entrepreneurs with the latest and most innovative ideas, helping them improve the lives of citizens through enhancing the services that the government provides.

Led by ex-deputy head of the No.10 policy unit, Daniel Korski, and venture investor, Alexander de Carvalho, PUBLIC’s team has operational experience across government, startups, technology and finance.

About GovStart

GovStart is PUBLIC’s flagship growth programme and the most ‘hands-on’ element of our startup engagement.

GovStart takes a carefully selected group of startups through six-months of mentorship to help them grow their traction with the public sector. The companies we work with range in both size and sector focus. In last year’s programme we accepted a one-person company looking to help pregnant women gain advice from trained midwives via an app, through to a 50 person company looking to transform how we find work - and we expect to have an even more diverse and exciting cohort of startups this year!

GovStart has a strong record of success: participants in our 2017 programme achieved significant government contracts and raised over £30m in funding. This is in no small part due to the efficiency and accuracy of the programme’s planning and operations. As Programme Associate, you will play a key role in upholding our high standards and finding new ways to deliver high-quality programme content.

The role

The Programme Associate sits at the heart of the GovStart programme, and is the first face participating startups will come to for help and advice. As such, programme associates will need to be able to balance a high volume of different - and often spontaneous - tasks that change on a day-to-day basis, whilst also maintaining the programme’s core organisation and administration.

PUBLIC is a dynamic company, pioneering approaches in a new and fast-growing sector. As such, the role of Programme Associate will likely also include providing operational support across Public’s strategy, investment and research projects. The ideal candidate will approach these activities as an opportunity to grow one’s experience beyond and above their programme responsibilities.

Person specification

The role of Programme Associate is a development position. As such we are primarily interested in candidates with strong character attributes and demonstrable potential to manage projects and achieve highly. Formal experience is valued, but not a necessity for the role. Training can be provided to outstanding candidates.

The selected candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • The ability to deliver on a high-volume of diverse tasks.

  • Past experience in managing projects or events to a high level organisation and presentation. (This can be in a professional, academic or extra-curricular context).

  • A high level of resourcefulness and determination.

  • The ability to take initiative and improve systems & processes.

  • Excitement to be working closely with startups.

  • Enthusiasm for working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Additional Skills include:

  • Experience of working in a startup.

  • Demonstrable interest in politics and/or new technology (AI, IoT, Blockchain, etc.)

  • Experience in marketing or design.

  • Experience in teaching/educational environments.
