Job Description
Bethnal Green Ventures (BGV) is looking to appoint a Non-Executive Member of its Investment Committee working alongside the Managing Partners to invest BGV's investment funds.BGV is a leading early-stage ‘tech for good’ investor. We believe technology can radically change people’s lives for the better. Our mission is to help talented teams launch and scale ventures using technology to tackle major social and environmental problems, improving millions of people’s lives.
Since 2012 we’ve backed over 110 ventures including Fairphone, DrDoctor, Open Utility, Overleaf, Andiamo, OurPath, Onaria, Organise and many more. While the core BGV team is small (we’re a team of nine people), our wider community includes over 60 active ventures in our portfolio, an alumni group of over 200 founders and over 100 mentors. We work alongside our ventures in our co-working space at the Ministry of Startups in Shoreditch, London. In our quest to grow the overall tech for good movement, we started and co-host the Tech For Good meetup in London, have supported the opening of meetups across the UK and Europe and run the Tech For Good Global website.
BGV is nearing the first close of a new £20 million investment fund, and has a number of other investment partnerships expected to commence in the coming months.
The role
Member, and potentially Chair, of our Investment Committee
Prepare for and participate in around 20 meetings per year which may include presentations from potential investee companies
Consider investment and divestment recommendations made by BGV and provide challenge and support to the Managing Partners and wider team
Review reports on portfolio performance and provide advice on actions and support for portfolio companies
Review quarterly valuations and accounts for BGV managed funds
Provide informal advice to Managing Partners from time to time outside of meetings
Attend Limited Partners Advisory Committee meetings and AGM / Portfolio Days
Total estimated time commitment average of three days per month or 36 days per year
Person
Senior experience and strong track record in early stage venture capital investing and realisation of investments
Commitment to bringing about positive social and environmental change, interest and understanding of impact investing or ESG driven investing, understanding and belief in the role of technology in driving positive change
Strong networks in early stage venture capital and technology investing
Previous experience as a member of an Investment Committee or relevant equivalent governance group; appreciation of the role of the Non-Executive in such governance
Motivated to support a young(ish), high potential team and management company build a significant business over time
Demonstrates behaviours consistent with BGV’s Principles
