Job Description

About the company

PUBLIC exists to build and help technology startups transform public services, providing capital, networks, insight and support. Led by ex-deputy head of the No.10 policy unit, Daniel Korski, and venture investor, Alexander de Carvalho, Public’s team has operational experience in government, startups, technology and finance. Our mission is to help startups do business successfully with the public sector.

Our flagship growth programme - GovStart - launched in June 2017, taking ten companies through a six month programme of mentorship and exposure with the public sector, to improve their traction in the market. Alongside this, we have launched a programme of research - beginning with State of the UK GovTech Market, a summary assessment of the market to date. The next year will see the roll out of further products and services from Public, to support transformative GovTech startups.

Key to our mission is making Public the best-networked organisation in the world of government digitisation, with a range of stakeholders from digital practitioners to policy leads, to senior leaders.

This role will report to the new Director of Research & Insight, who oversees Public’s research portfolio and related strategic engagement with policy makers and corporate partners.

The Role

This role will drive Public’s engagement with the public sector in the UK and internationally, and build opportunities for innovative tech companies to test and sell their products with a range of public sector bodies. Responsibilities will include:

  • Build and manage strong, enduring relationships with relevant public sector figures, in local and central government, as well as arms length bodies.
  • With the Director of Research, develop Public’s strategy for strategic engagement with the public sector, that supports the company’s wider objectives.
  • Attend events on behalf of Public, to build networks and engage on relevant policy and transformation agendas.
  • Support the CEO, Chief Investment Officer and wider Public team with expert advice and briefing around their own engagement with senior government figures.
  • Use knowledge of digital policy and government transformation programmes to inform Public’s strategy and research.
  • Contribute to Public’s corporate communications, including via social media and the weekly newsletter.
  • Working with Public’s corporate partners to deliver a series of thought leadership events with senior public sector leaders and tech advocates

You will be expected to shape and grow the role in line with the needs of the business, and will seek out opportunities to maximise Public’s impact in the GovTech space.

Person Specification

The right candidate will have a good knowledge of the structure and work of the UK’s public sector - including local and central government bodies and arms length bodies - and will have demonstrable experience of building networks in the public sector. You will have a strong understanding of digital transformation programmes, and will have worked with digital, delivery and policy teams. Preferably, you will have some experience of working directly with local government.

Your verbal and written communication skills will be second to none, and you will have the confidence and credibility to hold your own with senior figures in the public and private sectors, at home and abroad.

You will be excited by the challenge of working for a startup, and having the opportunity to get closely involved with setting the direction of the company, and will be comfortable taking ownership of projects and strategically significant relationships.

Most importantly, you will have a real desire to make a difference in the GovTech space, and will take every opportunity to further Public’s mission to transform public sector digital services.
