Job Description

The Alliance for Useful Evidence is looking for an experienced Researcher to provide research and support to champion the use of evidence in social policy and practice.

About the Alliance for Useful Evidence

Based at Nesta, The Alliance for Useful Evidence is a partnership between the Big Lottery Fund, the Economic and Social Research Council and Nesta. We aim to stimulate the demand and use of evidence in decision-making across national government, local government, practitioners, charities, and service delivery organisations. The Carnegie UK Trust provides in-kind support to the post by hosting the staff member. There is a permanent desk for the Alliance in their award winning offices at Pittencrieff Park in Dunfermline. The post-holder is welcome at all the Trusts social events and invited to many of their meetings and events.

About the role

As Researcher you will conduct research to help the Alliance make a difference, working with colleagues to influence politicians, civil servants, charity leaders, frontline professionals and citizen groups. This will involve conducting interviews, running literature reviews and background research, writing case studies and co-authoring thought-leadership reports. You will also scope out topics and speakers for events and coordinate a small group of UK evidence champions and strategic partnerships, as well as assisting our Learning Services Manager in running a one-day Evidence Masterclass for the UK policy profession and others.

To secure this exciting opportunity

As you will be an ambassador for the Alliance in Scotland, it is vital that you have credibility when communicating, conducting or commissioning our research, so you’ll need to be confident with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex research findings to a non-specialist audience. You will bring a proven track record in research relating to policy or practice and will have written and produced substantive reports, blogs, publications, etc. A knowledge of social science and evaluation, including qualitative and quantitative methods and the ability to research and work independently is essential.
